In July of 2023, Alabama State Senator, Lance Bell (R-Pell City,) introduced a bill to establish THE JOINT STUDY COMMISSION ON ADVANCED AIR MOBILITY. This is in the footsteps of the United States Congress introducing the “Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act” in 2022. Bell is optimistic that the bill will help Alabama lead in the growing Advanced Air Mobility field.
Starting the Commission
The bill that has been proposed entails the establishment of a commission comprising 12 members, with a primary focus on evaluating various aspects of the state’s current aviation infrastructure. It aims to determine the necessary actions required to bolster its participation and expansion within new local, regional, and urban transportation systems.
What The Commission Will DO
A critical component of this initiative involves the identification of Alabama-based companies that are actively involved in the aeronautical industry. This critical step is vital in strengthening their contribution to Advanced Air Mobility. Furthermore, the bill underscores the significance of attracting and engaging pioneering companies that specialize in Advanced Air Mobility technology or logistics to establish a presence within the state.
The commission’s objectives include assessing the state’s existing aviation infrastructure and determining the steps needed to integrate it into new local, regional, and urban transportation systems. It also aims to identify Alabama-based companies that serve the aeronautical industry to foster their contributions to AAM and to recruit innovative companies engaged in AAM technology or logistics to the state .
Final Steps of the Commission
The resultant impact of this endeavor is deemed essential in enhancing the state’s position within the rapidly advancing landscape of Advanced Air Mobility. Additionally, the specified study commission is mandated to present its recommendations on Advanced Air Mobility legislation to the Governor by the third day of the 2025 Regular Session of the Legislature. Following the submission of the recommendations, the commission will be dissolved, having fulfilled its designated purpose within the scope of this critical legislative initiative.
