This evening, First Alert 4 in St. Louis contacted Aviate Alabama in connection with their coverage of a tragic helicopter crash in the Mississippi River near Alton, Missouri. The incident involved an MD500 helicopter, a type known for its agility and versatility in law enforcement and utility work.
While we did not have footage of the exact aircraft involved in the crash, we were able to provide archival video of an MD500 operated by the Oxford Police Department. This footage was featured in the First Alert 4 newscast at the 5:26 mark, helping viewers better understand the type of helicopter in question.
The MD500 series has been a trusted workhorse in a variety of aviation roles for decades, from police patrols to agricultural operations. Unfortunately, like all aircraft, it is not immune to mechanical issues or the unpredictable challenges of flight.
📌 About the MD500 Helicopter
Aviate Alabama
The MD500 series is a light utility helicopter originally developed by Hughes Helicopters and later produced by McDonnell Douglas. Known for its agility, compact size, and reliability, the MD500 is widely used in law enforcement, military, and commercial operations. Police departments often choose it for patrol, search and rescue, and surveillance, thanks to its ability to maneuver in tight spaces and operate at low altitudes. Its distinctive five-blade main rotor and sleek profile make it easily recognizable to aviation enthusiasts.
We extend our condolences to all those affected by the accident in Alton. It is always difficult to see an aircraft go down, especially when lives are lost or families are impacted.
It was a privilege for Aviate Alabama to support First Alert 4 in their reporting efforts. Aviation media plays a vital role in providing accurate, timely, and context-rich visuals that help the public better understand the aircraft they see in the skies.
Our mission has always been to document aviation in all its forms — from airline traffic and private jets to helicopters and historic warbirds — and to make that footage available for educational and news purposes. We are proud to have been able to contribute to this important news coverage.
