KC-135

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is a vital aerial refueling aircraft that has served as the backbone of the United States Air Force’s tanker fleet for over 60 years. Developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype (alongside the commercial 707 airliner), the KC-135 first entered service in 1957, replacing the slower, propeller-driven KC-97. Its primary mission is to extend the range and endurance of military aircraft by providing in-flight refueling, a capability crucial for global power projection and sustaining air operations in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War to Operation Desert Storm and beyond. Beyond its refueling role, the versatile KC-135 can also transport cargo and passengers, and even perform aeromedical evacuations, solidifying its status as an indispensable asset for the USAF and its allies worldwide.
