Aviate Alabama recently sat down with a director of Aviation for a small company in Alabama. We discussed what they look for in determining an MRO for their needs. Below is an excerpt from our chat.
As a Director of Aviation for a small firm that owns both prop planes and a jet, selecting the right Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) provider is critical to ensuring the safety, performance, and longevity of the fleet. Here’s what I would prioritize:
Expertise Across Aircraft Types
- Why it matters: Since our fleet consists of both prop planes and a jet, the MRO needs to have proven expertise in maintaining diverse aircraft types. They should be familiar with the unique maintenance needs of smaller, piston-driven aircraft as well as the more complex systems found in jets.
- Key Considerations:
- Certified technicians for both turboprops and jets
- Manufacturer-authorized service center for the specific models in our fleet
- Specialized tooling and technology for different aircraft systems
Strong Track Record in Safety and Compliance
- Why it matters: Safety is non-negotiable. The MRO must have a strong reputation for adhering to all regulatory requirements (FAA, EASA, etc.), and their maintenance processes should meet or exceed industry standards.
- Key Considerations:
- Compliance with FAA Part 145 regulations
- A robust quality assurance program
- History of zero major safety incidents or violations
Proactive Communication and Transparency
- Why it matters: Downtime directly impacts our firm’s operations, so clear, proactive communication is essential for planning maintenance schedules and minimizing disruptions.
- Key Considerations:
- Regular maintenance updates and progress reports
- Transparency in quoting and billing (no surprise costs)
- Strong customer service, with a dedicated point of contact for ongoing support
Turnaround Time and Availability
- Why it matters: A reliable MRO that can handle urgent repairs or routine maintenance with minimal downtime is crucial for keeping the fleet operational.
- Key Considerations:
- Short lead times for both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
- Adequate inventory of parts or strong supplier relationships for quick part sourcing
- Emergency AOG (Aircraft on Ground) support
Cost-Effectiveness without Compromising Quality
- Why it matters: While safety and service quality are the top priorities, I also need to ensure that maintenance costs remain within our budget. We’re looking for cost-effective solutions that don’t cut corners.
- Key Considerations:
- Fair and competitive pricing structures
- Options for multi-aircraft or long-term service agreements to reduce costs
- Flexibility in billing, such as flat rates for certain services or predictable hourly rates
Facilities and Equipment
- Why it matters: The MRO’s facilities need to be equipped to handle our aircraft types and should have the latest diagnostic tools and testing equipment to ensure accurate, efficient repairs.
- Key Considerations:
- Modern, well-maintained hangars
- Availability of specialized equipment, including non-destructive testing and avionics diagnostic tools
- Proper aircraft storage during maintenance (weather-protected hangar space)
Reputation and Recommendations
- Why it matters: The reputation of the MRO within the aviation community is a strong indicator of the quality of their service. I’d look for client testimonials and recommendations from other operators.
- Key Considerations:
- Positive reviews from similar-sized operators
- References from other firms with mixed fleets
- Industry certifications or accolades
By prioritizing these factors, I’d be looking for an MRO partner that not only keeps our fleet in top condition but also ensures operational efficiency and cost management, all while meeting the high safety and regulatory standards required in aviation.
