Bangor Air National Guard Base
Bangor Air National Guard Base, located in Bangor, Maine, is home to the 101st Air Refueling Wing, famously known as the “MAINEiacs.” This Air National Guard unit plays a crucial role in extending the global reach and power of the United States Air Force and allied nations by providing essential in-flight refueling services with its fleet of KC-135R Stratotankers. Beyond its primary refueling mission, the wing also possesses the capability to transport cargo and personnel and support aeromedical evacuations, making it a versatile and indispensable asset for both national defense and humanitarian operations.
The 101st Air Refueling Wing has a rich history, having transitioned through various roles from fighter interception to air refueling since its activation. Its strategic location in Maine makes it a vital hub for aircraft deploying to or returning from European and Middle Eastern theaters. The base actively participates in joint exercises and deployments, consistently demonstrating its proficiency and readiness in supporting worldwide contingencies. As the Air Force gradually modernizes its tanker fleet, Bangor Air National Guard Base is also a strong contender to receive the next-generation KC-46A Pegasus tankers, further solidifying its long-term importance in aerial refueling capabilities.
In addition to the 101st Air Refueling Wing, the broader Maine Air National Guard includes a Joint Forces Headquarters, and two geographically separated units that also fall under its umbrella:3
- 243rd Engineering Installation Squadron
- 265th Combat Communications Squadron
While these two squadrons are geographically separated (stationed in South Portland, Maine), they are integral to the Maine Air National Guard’s overall capabilities, providing specialized support for communications and infrastructure.
