The Auburn University Regional Airport (KAUO) is located in Auburn, Alabama. It serves as the base for the flight program that Auburn offers, as well as, hangaring the university aircraft for administration. Typically visiting college football teams will land in either Columbus, Georgia or Montgomery, Alabama though.

The University’s campus is 3 miles from the airport. Auburn University is an FAA Approved Part 41 Pilot School. Degree certifications and ratings include Private Pilot Certification, Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Certification, Multi-Engine Rating, Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), CFI with Instrument Rating (CFII), and Multi-Engine Instructor (MEI). One advanced pilot or flight instructor certification/rating MUST be completed at Auburn and to be Restricted ATP (R-ATP) eligible, the ground and flight training for the instrument rating and commercial pilot certificate must be completed at Auburn.

Planespotting at Other Airports

My first experience at Auburn airport was absolutely fantastic. The facility is top-notch, and from a planespotting perspective, it’s simply unbeatable. The dedicated public balcony, accessible during business hours, offers an elevated and unobstructed view of all the arrivals and departures.

The balcony is popular with residents and families as it offers a safe, enjoyable opportunity to planespot with unique operations from time to time. The airport sees a fair share of military flights along with plenty of Cessna 172 training flights for students enrolled in their aviation program.

It is unlikley for the airport to see regularly scheduled air service any time soon. The airport enjoys robust traffic on gameday weekends. Certain visiting teams are well known to have a traveling private jet armada including Texas A&M and LSU.
