We gathered the answers to some popular questions below. If you can’t find your question below feel free to contact us, and we’ll be happy to help.
What is an airport?
An airport is defined in the law as any area of land or water used or intended for landing or takeoff of aircraft including appurtenant area used or intended for airport buildings, facilities, as well as rights of way together with the buildings and facilities.
What do I need to planespot?
You can planespot with as little as just your eyes! However, many people enjoy taking photographs of the airplanes that they see and/or video. I started filming aircraft with nothing more than an iPhone! You can now check out the gear that I use at my Amazon store: Planespotting Gear.
Do airports allow you to planespot?
Every airport is different. Some airports actively promote the hobby of planespotting. Others are not so welcoming and may give you more trouble. However, whether an airport encourages planespotting or not it is imperative that you maintain safety, and respect all warnings, rules, and laws.
Also, it is important to consider the privacy of passengers whether they are boarding a commercial aircraft or a private aircraft. Although it is always interesting to see who boards and deplanes private aircraft that doesn’t inherently mean that person wants to end up in a picture on social media.

Is an airport the only place to plane spot from?
One of the great things about planespotting is you can do it from practically anywhere. Just look up in the sky and you very well may see an aircraft flying! You can then use any popular flight tracking app to see what the aircraft is.
How do I find out who owns an aircraft?
All aircraft are required to be registered with the FAA. Failure to register can result in civil penalties up to a fine of $27,500 and criminal penalties of a fine up to $250k and/or 3 years of imprisonment. The fee for registering an aircraft is $5.
Many aircraft owners will place their aircraft under an LLC or even a trust. Finding the beneficial owner of an aircraft that is behind an LLC or a trust can involve complex investigative techniques. Aviate Alabama can assist you in identifying the true owner of an aircraft hidden behind an LLC or trust. Contact us for more information: Contact here
